Valbuena joined the Astros in 2015, coming over from the Cubs in the Dexter Fowler trade. In his first season in Houston, Luis set personal highs in home runs (25), RBIs (56), and slugging percentage (.438). The native Venezuelan also was an outstanding defender who played multiple positions around the infield.

Having played for the Mariners, Indians and Cubs before arriving in Houston, he left for free agency after the 2016 season due to the emergence of Alex Bregman at third base. Valbuena finished his career with two seasons for the Angels. Overall, he batted .226 with 114 homers and 367 RBIs during 11 seasons in the majors.

Valbuena died at age 33 on December 6, 2018 in Yaracuy, Venezuela, in an auto accident caused by an obstacle placed in the road by highway robbers. Former Astro José Castillo died in the same incident.
