A righthanded reliever with a sidearm delivery, the Cincinnati native was drafted by the Mets in 2006 and made his debut the next season. The veteran also pitched for the Indians, Angels, Cubs and Blue Jays before signing a two-year contract with the Astros as a free agent beginning with the 2018 season. Although sidelined much of the 2019 season with an achilles injury, Smith compiled a 6-1 record and 3.06 ERA in 84 games. He was re-signed by Houston for an additional two years, beginning in 2020. Over his 13 big league seasons through 2019, Smith has amassed a 50-29 record and 2.98 ERA with 30 saves in 782 appearances. He has also made 18 postseason appearances and sports an 0-1 mark with a 2.57 ERA and an 0.786 WHIP in 14 innings pitched. Smith is married to popular sports reporter Allie LaForce and the two are active in Houston seeking a cure for Huntington's Disease which affects members of Smith's family. |
