The Georgia native starred at the University of Georgia before he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1995. He made his debut with the Tigers three years later and posted a 3-8 record with a 6.35 ERA in 18 games (16 starts) beofre he was dealt to the Astros in the seven-player swap that sent Brad Ausmus to Detroit.

Powell spent parts of two seasons with the Astros, compiling a 2-2 record with a 6.82 ERA in 10 games. He was released after the 2001 season. He later pitched for the Tigers, Giants and Phillies but had trouble staying on a major league roster. For his career, Powell registered a 7-18 mark with a 5.94 ERA over six seasons.

Brian Powell died on October 5, 2009 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 35 in Tallahassee, FL, just a short drive from his hometown.
