A rash of injuries to the Astros' starting rotation prompted the call-up of the highly touted pitching prospect a little earlier than expected. Martes made his big league debut in June of 2017 at the age of 21 after struggling mightily in his first eight starts at the AAA level. He stayed with the big club for the remainder of the season and showed flashes of brilliance but was unable to find consistency. Martes posted a 5-2 record and a 5.80 ERA in 32 games (4 starts).

Injuries, suspension and ineffectiveness have kept the Dominican in the minors the following two seasons but he hopes to put his career back on track during the 2020 season.
