The Ohio native had played with the Padres, Indians and Reds before signing with the Astros for the 1997 season. In 107 games, the switch-hitting outfielder hit .247 with three homers. He then finished up his career with the Dodgers and Cardinals.

For his 11-year career, Howard hit .264 with 44 homers and 66 steals.
