A native of Illinois, Grant first appeared with the Giants at age 20. He later pitched for the Padres, Braves and Mariners in an eight-year career. Houston signed him as a free agent before the 1993 season but he made it into just six games and eleven innings (with no decision) before he was dealt to the expansion Colorado Rockies for a minor leaguer.

For his career, Grant was 22-32 with eight saves and a 4.31 ERA.
