A utility infielder with the Tigers, Padres and Cardinals, Campbell was acquired by Houston in return for outfielder Tommie Agee. He batted .158 in parts of two seasons with the Astros. Overall, he hit .218 in an eight-year career.

Afterwards, he went into broadcasting and worked with ESPN for several years.
