The home run is the most exciting play in baseball. For raw power, you can watch as the 450-foot, towering upper-deck shots fill a stadium with awe. For sheer daring, you can hold your breath for inside-the-park homers and the batter's mad rush to home, racing to beat the outfielder's throw. For jump-starting an offense and setting the tone of a game, a leadoff homer does the job. For game-breaking ability, look no further than the grand slam. For true clutch hitting, a pinch-hit home run is hard to beat. And for the best celebrations, nothing beats the game-winning, walk-off homer.

In "pitchers parks" like Colt Stadium and the Astrodome, the home run was harder to come by and Houston players rarely contested for home run titles although Jim Wynn swatted 37 in 1967, finishing second to the great Hank Aaron.

In 1994, Jeff Bagwell exploded onto the scene, shattering Wynn's single season record with 39 in a strike-shortened season, belting 43 in 1997 then slamming 47 home runs in the team's first season in what was then known as Enron Field, today re-named Minute Maid Park. Teammates like Richard Hidalgo and Lance Berkman have also taken advantage of the friendlier confines to top the 40-homer plateau in a season.

The years in Minute Maid Park dominate the home run totals but the long ball has been a fixture in Houston for a long time. Why else would Judge Hofheinz have installed the Home Run Spectacular in the Astrodome?

Special dates:

April 10, 1962 - Houston fans watch the Colt .45s play the first major league game in Houston's history and marvel as Roman Mejias hits two home runs in an 11-2 victory over the Cubs.

June 11, 1967 - Jim Wynn launches a titanic blast against Cincinnati that flies out of Crosley Field.

July 14, 1967 - Eddie Mathews rips a three-run homer off Juan Marichal, the 500th of his major league career. It helps the Astros topple the Giants, 8-6.

July 30, 1969 - This was a special day for Astros home run fans. In the top of the 9th in a game against the Mets, Jim Wynn and Denis Menke each hit a grand slam, marking only the third time in major-league history that teammates had hit grand slams in the same inning.

September 2, 1971 - Trailing 3-2 to the Dodgers with the bases loaded, Cesar Cedeno hits a pop fly that turns into an inside-the-park grand slam when outfielders Bill Buckner and Jim Lefebvre collide.

May 22, 1974 - Talk about good timing. With the scored tied 1-1 in the 9th inning, catcher Milt May hits the first pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam in club history to beat Vincente Romo and the Padres.

July 30, 1975 - Relief pitcher Jose Sosa is the first Astro to homer in his first major-league at-bat, going deep in the Astrodome against Padre Danny Frisela. The game was Sosa's first major-league appearance and he finished the game, earning the only save of his career.

July 24, 1984 - Enos Cabell, Phil Garner, and Jose Cruz slug back-to-back-to-back homers off Mark Davis to highlight a nine-run fifth inning that dooms the Giants, 10-3, at Candlestick Park.

June 14, 2000 - Moises Alou, Richard Hidalgo and Tony Eusebio slug back-to-back-to-back homers to spark a four-run eighth inning that defeats the Rockies, 8-4, at Coors Field.

June 27, 2002 - Reserve catcher Gregg Zaun beats the Diamondbacks and joins Milt May as the only Astros to clobber a pinch-hit, game-winning grand slam

June 27, 2003 - Infielder Dave Matranga becomes the second Astro to homer in his first major-league at-bat, going deep in Houston against Ranger Joaquin Benoit.

August 31, 2004 - Carlos Beltran, Jeff Bagwell and Lance Berkman go back-to-back-to-back in the fourth off Aaron Harang and Jeff Kent homers twice in an 8-0 whitewash of Cincinnati.

September 8, 2004 - Astros bang four homers in the first inning to drop the Reds, 5-2. Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Lance Berkman and Mike Lamb turn the trick.

October 17, 2004 - Carlos Beltran sets a post-season record with his seventh straight game hitting a home run. The shot off Julian Tavarez gives the Astros a 6-5 win over St. Louis in Game Four of the NLCS.

July 25, 2005 - Craig Biggio and Lance Berkman hit back-to-back homers twice in the same game, going deep against Cory Lidle in the first and third innings of a 7-1 win over Philadelphia.

October 9, 2005 - Chris Burke slams a walk-off homer to end the longest post-season game in history, an 18-inning 7-6 triumph over the Atlanta Braves that clinches the NLDS and advances them into the next round.

September 4, 2006 - Charlton Jimerson becomes the third Astro to homer in his first major league at bat. The pinch-hit blast comes off Cole Hamels of Philadelphia in a 3-2 loss.

June 28, 2007 - On the night that Craig Biggio registers his 3,000th hit, Carlos Lee gives it a happy ending with a walk-off grand slam in the 11th for an 8-5 victory over Colorado. The homer comes off Brian Fuentes.

May 2, 2008 - Back-to-back-to-back homers by Miguel Tejada, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee highlight a 7-4 comeback win over Milwaukee. Carlos Villarreal is the victim.
