The Houston native was drafted by the Astros but chose, instead, to play at the University of Houston. When he was later drafted by the Phillies, the speedster hit .268 in parts of two seasons in Philadelphia in a backup capacity.

He became the main player acquired by Houston when they traded Brad Lidge to the Phillies after the 2007 season. After a bad 2008 season, Bourn led the National League in steals in both 2009 and 2010, while winning a Gold Glove and making the 2010 NL All-Star team.

Bourn was having his best season yet when he was dealt to the Atlanta Braves at the trade deadline for outfielder Jordan Schafer and three minor league pitchers. He won his third stolen base title in 2011.

This Date in Astros History

Dec 27, 1982 - Michael Bourn is born in Houston, TX. A key piece in the deal that sent Brad Lidge to Philadelphia, Bourn bats .271 with 193 steals in four seasons with the Astros (2008-2011), twice winning the NL stolen base title before a trade sent him to Atlanta.

Nov 07, 2007 - Ed Wade strikes a deal with Philadelphia, his former employer. Houston deals closer Brad Lidge and utilityman Eric Bruntlett to the Phillies for outfielder Michael Bourn, reliever Geoff Geary and minor leaguer Mike Costanzo. Bourn spent three years at the University of Houston before signing with the Phils. Costanzo is dealt to Baltimore later that winter.

Jul 02, 2009 - A 7-2 Astros victory in San Diego is delayed 52 minutes when a swarm of bees moves into left field and begins nesting in the jacket of the ballgirl in the top of the ninth. A local bee expert was brought in to kill and capture the queen and her nest, dispersing the others. "Killer B's" Geoff Blum, Lance Berkman and Michael Bourn delivered six hits, six runs and six RBIs between them.

Nov 11, 2009 - Michael Bourn wins the Gold Glove Award for National League outfielders. The Houston-born speedster is the first Houston outfielder to win the award since Cesar Cedeno in 1976. Bourn would take the honor again the following year.

Jun 1, 2010 - Lance Berkman drives in five, including the game-winner with two out in the bottom of the ninth to nip the Nationals, 8-7. Berkman had a two-run double and an RBI single before his two-run liner to left won the game. Jeff Keppinger added three hits and Michael Bourn scored three times.

Aug 3, 2011 - After deadline trades send Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn away for prospects, the rebuilding Astros take 2-of-3 from Cincinnati, including a 5-4 victory that is the first major league win for 20-year-old Jordan Lyles. Outfielder J.D. Martinez, called up from AA less than a week before, smashes a homer and double to drive in four. 21-year-old Jose Altuve and 22-year-old Jimmy Paredes add two hits apiece.
