A native of Baytown, TX, Wilson went to Channelview High School then Sam Houston State in Huntsville. Drafted and signed by the Tigers, Wilson debuted with Detroit in 1982. He was traded to Philadelphia in 1984 and made the All-Star team in 1985. Later sent to Seattle and the Pittsburgh, he was dealt back home to Texas late in the 1989 season for outfielder Billy Hatcher.

He hit .238 with 12 homers to finish out the 1989 campaign and play the 1990 season. That was thought to be the end of Wilson's career but he came back and played ten games for the Pirates in 1993. For his ten seasons in the majors, Wilson hit .265 with 98 homers and 27 steals.
