A former first-round pick of the Brewers, the versatile infielder played six seasons there but never settled in as an established regular. Claimed by the Mets after he was waived, he was granted free agency and signed with the Astros before the 1996 season.

Spiers took part in three division title clubs in Houston and had a game-winning RBI during the 1998 playoffs. In 1999, he was attacked by a fan who rushed out of the stands in Milwaukee who was controlled by teammates and arrested by police.

A popular bat off the bench and as a quality fill-in at several positions, Spiers batted .288 with 21 homers and 45 steals over six seasons in Houston. He retired after battling back trouble. In his 13 seasons overall, Spiers hit .271 with 37 homers.
