The Miami-born shortstop was dealt to Houston in the mega-trade with San Diego after the 1994 season. He played on three division winners while with the Astros, batting .266 during five seasons in Houston. Gutierrez hit seven homers and drove in 132 runs over that time.

He became a free agent and signed with the Cubs for the 2000 season. He later played for the Indians, Mets and Red Sox, compiling a career batting average of .266 with 38 homers over a dozen big league seasons.
