Rightfielder Derek Bell was acquired from the Padres after the 1994 season in the infamous trade that saw Ken Caminiti, Steve Finley and Andujar Cedeno depart for the West coast. With medium power and decent speed, Bell started out with a great first season as an Astro, batting .334 and driving in 86 runs in 1995.

Bell drove in 113 runs in 1996 but his best season came in 1998. Bell stroked 22 homers, batted .314, scored 111 runs and drove in 108 more as the Astros set a franchise record for wins (102). But his performance plummeted in 1999, frustrating Bell as his popularity with fans dropped faster than his batting average (.236). He was traded to the Mets along with Mike Hampton in the following off-season for Octavio Dotel and Roger Cedeno.
