Musgrove, Homers Tame Angels

Musgrove: Impressive start

The Astros salvaged one game with the Angels in the series that likely killed their playoff chances. Joe Musgrove worked seven solid innings to lead a 4-1 victory on Sunday which still leaves them three games behind Baltimore for the final playoff spot with six games left to play.

George Springer stayed hot with a 3-for-3 afternoon to go with Saturday night's four-hit game. He did not, however, factor in the scoring as Yuli Gurriel had a Joe Torre-type of day, hitting into four double plays in four at bats.

Other Astros fared better. Carlos Correa chased home Jose Altuve in the first with a base hit for his 94th RBI of the year as he tries to hit the century mark for the first time in his career. Evan Gattis doubled the lead with a solo homer to deep left-center in the second off rookie Daniel Wright who still lacks his first big league win.

Impish Tony Kemp socked his first big league home run into the right field seats off Wright in the fifth. Two innings later, Tyler White drilled a solo shot into the Crawfords for the final tally. This came against former Astro Brett Oberholtzer who had been sent to Philadelphia last winter for...

Ken Giles, who got back on the mound for the ninth to a smattering of boos after his six-run meltdown Friday night. Giles walked a batter but struck out three to notch his 14th save of the year.

Musgrove lasted seven innings, something few Astro starters have done lately. He scattered seven hits but walked not a soul while striking out four. Will Harris tossed a scoreless eighth.

The Astros achieved their second consecutive winning campaign after the nuclear winter seasons of 2011-2014. Part of that rebuilding job, righthander Collin McHugh (12-10), toes the rubber for Houston on Monday against Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12) as the Mariners come to town to settle who is second-best in the AL West. Game time is 7:10 Central at Minute Maid. Iwakuma is 5-6 lifetime against Houston in 13 starts with a 3.87 ERA. McHugh is 9-3 in 12 career starts versus Seattle with a 3.96 ERA.
