Mets ace Johan Santana struggled with control in the first inning and the Astros took advantage to gain a 4-1 victory on Saturday. Carlos Lee and Tommy Manzella had RBI singles in the opening frame then Lee launched a two-run homer in the fifth.
Brett Myers continued to step up as the new ace of the staff. He tossed seven shutout innings while striking out six and allowing six hits. Myers set a team record with his 27th consecutive start of six innings or more. The Mets finally broke through in the eighth off Wilton Lopez but Brandon Lyon came in to finish for his eighth save.
Manzella had three hits while Jason Bourgeois joined Lee with two each. Brad Mills started Lee at first and paired Bourgeois with Michael Bourn in the outfield and at the top of the order.
The Astros assured themselves of a winning road trip and a winning month with the victory. They hope to add more on Sunday when Bud Norris (6-7) tries to even his record against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (8-5) in a 12:10 Central start.
