Enyelberth Soto: 7JJ/ 3 JI/ 1 G/ 2 P/ 15.0 I.P/ 15 H/ 6 CP/ 6CL/ 7B.B/ 8 K.O/ EFE 3.60

Tim Mcclaskey (AA)11JJ/ 0JI/ 1G/1P/ 0S/ 20.0 I.P/ 26 H/ 9CP/ 6CL/ 2B.B/ 11K.O/ EFE 2.70
Rob Stanifer (AAA) 9JJ/ 0JI/ 0G/1P/ 1S/ 13.0 I.P/13H/ 5CP/ 5 CL/ 6B.B/ 11K.O/ EFE 3.46

News from Venezuela

Since October 16th, the fans of Venezuelan Baseball have been enjoying a season full of emotions. The social problems of the past year caused a less than happy ending to the prior season. This year new stars (figures) have arisen that surely will occupy an important part in the pages of the sports dailies in the near future.

In terms of the players that are part of the Houston Astros organization, the news is very good. The stats that are referred to here are up to date to November 10, 2003. We will start this report with the pitchers and then talk about the position players.

Pitchers:

Carlos Hernández: 2JJ /2JI /1G /1P / 6.1 IP/ 10H/ 8 R/ 7 ER/ 2 BB/ 5 K/ ERA 9.95.

After a horrible start in his debut, when he allowed 6 runs and 7 hits in 1.1 IP, Carlos righted himself and pitched really well in his second start. I haven’t seen him pitch with the same velocity on his fastball (as before), but we have to remember that he is still in rehabilitation (from his shoulder surgery). He has also used his curveball only a few times. We’re sure that with each outing, Carlos Hernandez will gain more strength in that arm. His workload has been limited to a limited pitch count right now.

Fernando Nieve: 4JJ/ 4JI/ 3 G/ 0P/ 20.0 IP/13 H/ 3 R/ 2 ER/ 6 BB/ 22 K/ ERA 0.90

Fernando Nieve has shown much progress this year. He won 14 games with the Lexington club (this year), striking out 144 batters in 150 IP. This right-handed pitcher can be a real surprise for Houston in the future. His numbers so far in Venezuela are consistent: 0.95 WHIP and a 0.90 ERA, so many are talking about this young pitcher. One of the things to bring to your attention about Fernando, aside from his ability to strike people out, is his mound poise. He looks and acts like an experienced pitcher. He does not lose his concentration on the mound. Fernando is the league’s leading pitcher for the winter season so far.

Juan Campos: 7JJ/ 0 JI/ 3 G/ 0P/ 0 S/ 8.2 IP/ 7 H/ 2 R/ 1 ER/ 4 BB/ 12 K/ ERA 1.04

Campos has been used very little by his manager this year, even though his rare outings have been real good. He looked as if he was making progress. With Salem, (Juan) saved 24 games with a 1.84 ERA in 68.1 innings pitched. His 12 strikeouts in 8.2 innings this winter season show clearly the power of this young pitcher’s arm. Last year he started to show his ability in Venezuela as a closer with a 2.50 ERA and 33 Ks in 36 IP. Campos could be considered a useful reliever in the making for the future. We hope to continue to see him progress in AA next year.

Enyelberth Soto: 7JJ/ 3 JI/ 1 G/ 2 P/ 15.0 IP/ 15 H/ 6 R/ 6ER/ 7BB/ 8 K/ ERA 3.60

I confess to not having watched him pitch yet. I will try and bring you information on him in the next report.

As well as the players named above, several AA and AAA pitchers were invited to play this winter that were in the Houston Astros organization. Several are free agents and their stats in Venezuela are as follows:

Tim Mcclaskey (AA)11JJ/ 0JI/ 1G/1P/ 0 S/ 20.0 IP/ 26 H/ 9 R/ 6 ER/ 2 BB/ 11 K/ ERA 2.70

Rob Stanifer (AAA) 9JJ/ 0JI/ 0G/1P/ 1 S/ 13.0 IP/13 H/ 5 R/ 5 ER/ 6 BB/ 11 K/ ERA 3.46

Position Players:

Héctor Gímenez .348 AVE/ 66 AB/ 10 R/ 23 H/ 5 H2/ 2 H3/ 0 HR/ 9 RBI/ 3 BB/ 18 K/ 1BR

At the time this report was being written, Hector was the seventh leading hitter in the league. He has been used as a catcher, first baseman and DH (this winter). The first few weeks he was used exclusively as a clean-up hitter in games. This switch-hitter possesses a short, compact swing. He is a line drive hitter who can also run very well, as his triples number and stolen base stats can attest. In two games in Caracas-Magallanes, a place to catch a glimpse of the players, Hector has been the best baseball player. The way he conducts himself with the pitchers during a game in spite of his young age and his attitude on the field make me think it is only a matter of time when he replaces (John) Buck as the leading catching prospect in the Houston Astros (system). In any case, these two young players (Buck and Gimenez) will be the talk of Houston in terms of the catching position in the years to come. I would like for Gimenez to improve his K/BB ratio though. Hector will be amongst the candidates for ROY in the Venezuelan League this year. He is a prototypical leader as a player.

Raúl Chávez .158 AVE/ 19 AB/ 0 R/ 3 H/ 0 H2/ 0 H3/ 0 HR/ 2 RBI/ 1 BB/ 2 K/ 0 BR

Raul had very little luck to start the season in the first few weeks. Although he is strong on defense, his bat has been lacking even though many believe he can do better than he’s done so far. He should get better as the season wears on.

About the changes and what may come to pass…

The loss of the best left handed closer in the major leagues was painful for the fans of the Astros. The changes always bring some heartache. Some turn out well with luck, others not so well. The Houston organization is full of these types of deals in their history. On a personal note, I like this change. Just like Octavio Dotel was a key figure in the trade with the New York Mets years ago, Taylor Bucholz should be the first player looked at in the recent trade. Considered amongst the top ten right handed pitching prospects by various publications (Baseball America has him listed as number six). Taylor Bucholz will begin the season in AAA, and with a little luck, he will be in the big leagues before the All-Star game. I think he will be very important addition to the big league club. As far as Duckworth is concerned, it would be wised to experiment with making him a reliever, especially for the 7th or 8th inning to help Lidge in case (the Astros) can’t pick up a good reliever this off-season. Duckworth’s problems are similar to Redding in terms of the control problems and pitching mechanics, this is why I think he should focus on being a one to two inning reliever instead (a transition that Dotel made from starter to reliever). It is still unknown what fate awaits Hidalgo. The presence of great outfielder in free agency (Guerro and Sheffield are the two that are thought of first in this year’s market) will make it difficult to move Richard, but I think the management team will do all they can to make it happen. I keep betting that Lane will have a very good season if they give him his chance to play. Clearly they will miss the strong arm of Hidalgo, but Lane will surprise folks with his defense. Management is focused on Andy Pettitte’s availability. There is a saying “It will rain and we shall see”. We have to wait (for all to play out) but I feel and think objectively that Batista would be an alternative that the organization will settle in on to firm up the rotation. Hidalgo’s exit, (which will also hurt the fans of the team) translates to a windfall to go out and find a good pitcher in this year’s free agency market. I don’t think Wagner’s trade was sufficient enough to make that a possibility for the management team. Pettitte is too costly and I don’t think New York will let him leave so easily.

See you in several weeks.
