Astros 95, Cardinals 92, Cubs 90

added 9/23/2001 by Steve Cutchen

With ten series remaining for the Astros, Cubs and Cardinals, each had five home and home series left. As these series go by, I'm comparing the results against my prediction for what would be needed for a 3-way tie at 92 wins at season's end. This Knuckleball shows the results through 6 of 10 series; Chicago at Houston, predicted at 2-1 Houston and St. Louis at Pittsburgh, predicted at 2-2.

On Thursday, Mark McGwire added PNC park to the list of parks he's homered in, and the Cards won 7-1 behind Woody Williams.

On Friday, the Cubs-Astros series kicked off with Ron Villone taking the hill. Luckily for the Astros, when you get slaughtered, it still counts as only one loss. The Cubs take the series opener 12-4. Meanwhile, the Cards continued their boring baseball. St. Louis beat up on the Bucs, 9-5

The Cards won their ninth in a row on Saturday, going 4-1 in Pittsburgh. In Houston, the Astros evened up their series with the Cubs as Shane Reynolds stayed perfect against Chicago. Shane benefited from a rally begun by Orlando Merced, who came in for Reynolds as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth and keyed the game winning rally.

The Cards had a chance to with 10 in a row for the third time this year, but fell short in the series finale at PNC Park. They fell 2-1. At Enron, Sammy Sosa hit 3 home runs off of Astros twirler Tim Redding. But a one-man wrecking crew was not enough as Houston came back to win the game 7-6 and the series 2-1.

Up next for the Cubs is their last road series of the year at Pittsburgh. Houston gets the Cardinals at Enron . I predict the Cubs and Houston go 2-1 (and thus the Cards go 1-2).

Below are the predictions and outcomes through the first 6 of the last 10 series.

That's my Knuckleball. Try to hit it.
