Astros 93, Cubs 93, Cardinals 90

added 9/2/2001 by Steve Cutchen

With ten series remaining for the Astros, Cubs and Cardinals, each had five home and home series left. As these series go by, I'm comparing the results against my prediction for what would be needed for a 3-way tie at 92 wins at season's end. This Knuckleball shows the results through 2 of 10 series; Houston at Milwaukee, predicted at 2-1, Chicago at Atlanta, predicted at 1-2 and St. Louis at Los Angeles, predicted at 2-1.

On Friday, all three teams took care of business. Chicago was the most impressive, beating Burkett in Atlanta 8-2. The other important thing for CubsNation was the good performance of Juan Cruz. A young gun of their own. The Astros needed heroics from Vinny Castilla who hit a 9th inning 2 out 2-0 pitch for a 2 run homer to give the Astros the win. St. Louis got great work from their newly acquired starter Woody Williams and beat the Dodgers 5-1. They beat up on Eric Gagne for 4 runs on 5 hits in 4 innings.

Chicago continued an impressive run at Atlanta on Saturday by beating Greg Maddux 5-3. This win guaranteed a win against the prediction for the Cubs. I had predicted they would go 1-2 and they were now sitting at 2-0. Houston, who lived by the sword on Friday died by it on Saturday, falling to a 9th inning walk-off home run by Richie Sexon. Terry Adams come out of nowhere to pitch a gem against the Cards, going 8 innings in a 3-1 win to even the series in Los Angeles.

On Sunday, the Cubs finally looked mortal in Atlanta, mainly because Kevin Tapani is not pitching well of late. The Braves touched him up for 6 runs on 10 hits, including jacks by the Jones brothers. In Milwaukee, Wade Miller continued his voodoo over the Brewers, shutting them out through 8 innings. Wagner closed out the shutout. And it was a good thing because Houston's offense continued in the dumper. Houston won 1-0. And late night out in LA, we had what looked like a marquee pitching matchup with Kevin Brown meeting Darryl Kile. Brown, back from the DL, only went 5 innings and gave up 3 runs. But Kile gave up 6 (5 earned) through 5 2/3. Dodgers win 7-3.

Up next for the Cubs is a trip to Miami to visit the Marlins, while the Cardinals drop down the coast to San Diego. Houston is also on the road, at Cincinnati. I predict the Cubs and Cards go 2-1 and Houston goes 1-2.

Below are the predictions and outcomes through the first 2 of the last 10 series.

That's my Knuckleball. Try to hit it.
